Family Photo Tips From A Knoxville Family Photographer

I’m a Knoxville family photographer specializing in bright, timeless images. Family photos can be overwhelming for many, whether it’s small family with littles ones to an extended family session. However, I believe it doesn’t have to be! The key is to being prepared for photos, knowing what to expect and working with a photographer that can help you with these things. There are several things I’ve learned in my experience that can make an impact on your experience. Here’s what you can do to improve yours.

Providing grouping requests for extended family sessions

When I get an inquiry for an extended family session, I communicate with the client ahead of time to get a list of preferred groupings. With large groups, it can get hectic. Families are all catching up with each other when not in front of the camera and kids are playing nearby. A list of must have groupings with names that can be called out helps move along the process. It’s easier for people to know where they need to be. Personally, I like to get through these images first knowing that they are the most important. Then, I can move on to other groupings as time allows.

With a smaller family, I always get a mixture individual, couple, sibling, and full family photos. Getting variety in the session is key! That being said, if there are any images that are a “must”, communicate this to your Knoxville family photographer. You should be aware that some photos envisioned may not be possible. For example, young children not interested in photos or willing to sit still. I do have a few tricks up my sleeve to help with situations like this.

Choose coordinating outfits for your family photos

I always caution families against matching outfits. Instead of wearing matching shirts, opt for a mixture of colors, shades or patterns that are cohesive. The photos will instantly look more elevated. You can’t go wrong with pastels and neutrals. They have a timeless appearance and fit the light and airy style perfectly. After booking with me, each client gets a family photo prep guide that includes tips for choosing flattering outfits and choosing colors with examples.

Tip for those getting family photos with young children

When getting photos with young children, I recommend making sure they’ve had a chance to nap and have a snack before photos. They are much more cooperative for photos. Also, bringing along a toy they like can help keep them busy and engaged. It’s important to know that specific photos aren’t always possible. Sometimes little ones aren’t happy about getting photos. When this happens I will take a break from photos with this child and circle back later. Alternatively, I like to capture them playing or enjoying time on their own. These are usually my favorite images too!

Plan for extra travel time

I suggest planning extra travel time. Giving yourself extra time to get to the location, especially if you haven’t been there before can relieve some stress if you get lost or stuck in traffic. Typically, arriving 10-15 minutes before your session starts is recommended. Trust me, it makes a difference. The more calm you are going into photos, the more relaxed you will appear in the images.

Choosing a Knoxville family photographer

Look into which photographer is right for you. As a photographer, I know that I’m not right for everyone. Styles vary and so do experiences. That being said, if you’re looking for bright, timeless images with a stress-free experience, you can learn more about getting Knoxville family photos here.
