You don’t need to be a senior for senior photos

You don’t need to be a senior for senior pictures. Wait, what?

Senior photos don’t often happen during senior year of high school. Instead, it’s most common to get photos during the junior school year or the summer before senior year. There are a few reasons for this. The first is that the spring and summer seasons in Montana have beautiful weather. Secondly, summer schedules are usually more flexible for meeting with a photographer. No classes, homework, or clubs to work around. Lastly, yearbook deadlines are typically in October. That being said, getting photos earlier on gives you plenty of time to meet the deadline.

How to choose the right senior photographer for you

Choosing a photography style is subjective. What photography style are you drawn to? Each photographer has a unique style of coloring in photos, posing, and preparation leading up to the photoshoot. Whichever style you choose, make sure it’s one you like. Don’t expect the photographer to edit photos differently to match your preference. Photographers are experts in their unique style of photography and how to achieve that look for your senior pictures.

Next, you need to know before booking your senior pictures which photographer will help you feel comfortable in front of the camera. What is their personality like? How will they help prepare you? Look at reviews to see what past seniors have experienced and look through the photographer’s social media. What is their personality like? Would you get along with them? When you are more comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera, you will love your images.

How to get the most out of your senior pictures

Planning outfits, accessories, props, and locations that lend themselves to variety is important in getting the most out of your senior pictures. I don’t recommend only bringing one outfit. You are limiting yourself. Don’t go overboard with planning outfits, but 2-4 outfits is usually a good amount. Recognize that it will take longer than you think to change outfits. This will cut into your time a bit, but I think it’s worth it. You don’t even need to buy a new outfit for photos. In another blog post, I’ve shared where to find outfits for a photoshoot, giving you a few ideas.
