Tips For Makeup In Photos

When it comes to getting photos, I want the process to be stress-free for clients. A common struggle is how to apply makeup for photos. I always recommend having a professional apply it for you. However, if you’re applying makeup yourself, there are a few things you can do to perfect it. It can look a little different than your everyday look. Speaking from experience, makeup in photos can make a difference. I’ve had portraits taken using these tips and without. Knowing what to look for can help you look and feel your best in photos.

“Should I wear makeup for my photos?”

Wearing makeup for photos will help you avoid looking washed out on camera. When applying makeup for photos, it’s important to wear more than you typically would. It will look more like your everyday makeup when photographed. Additionally, your face will pop more in photos. We want your beautiful smile to be the focus of an image!

Makeup for photos: tips to help you prepare

  • The most important tip I can give is to apply your makeup in natural light. I’m a natural light photographer which means that you will be photographed with sunlight, not studio lights. Putting on your makeup in natural lighting allows you to see how the coloring will look in the same lighting.
  • Matte makeup will be your best friend. Avoid shiny or sparkly makeup as it can reflect the light. Instead, opt for matte powder and eye shadow.
  • Choose a lipstick color that will look good with all of your outfit choices and bring it for touch-ups at the photoshoot.
  • Apply makeup with more coverage than you normally wear and begin with a primer to help the makeup last longer.
  • Don’t forget about the lashes! Wear your mascara thicker. Another optional idea is to wear false eyelashes. Some of my clients like how these help their eyes pop in photos.
  • Plan enough time before your photo shoot to do your makeup so you aren’t rushing last minute.
