These simple tips of what to wear for headshots will prepare you to look and feel your best. Finding clothes you feel comfortable and confident in will set the tone for your session.
Often headshot photos are dreaded, but they don’t have to feel like an awkward yearbook photo. Headshots sessions can be stress-free. It all begins with the right outfit!
In headshots, your shirt will be visible in the images, not your whole outfit. These are photographed from the waist or chest up. Wear a neutral or pastel shirt in a solid color. Small patterns have a tendency to distort photos.
Bonus tip: Iron your shirt to minimize wrinkles
beige, gray, navy blue, or white
pink, yellow, blue, green
It doesn’t matter which sleeve length you choose. If you feel self conscious about your arms in photos opt for 3/4 length sleeves, long sleeves, a blazer, or a cardigan. The more confident you feel in your outfit, the more relaxed you will appear in the photos.
Simple necklaces and earrings are great options for your headshots. Additionally, a light jacket, blazer, or cardigan will pair nicely. I don’t recommend wearing a hat for headshots, as they can cast a shadow on your face. We want your great smile to be the focus of the image!
Professional hair and makeup artists know what shows up best on camera. It also takes the stress away on the day of photos. Don’t be surprised when it’s a bit more makeup than you typically wear. Makeup shows up differently on camera than in person.
Ultimately, it all comes down to where you work. Is the business more on the casual or formal side? I suggest wearing an outfit that reflects the average workday.
